  Physical properties

  Hardness and toughness:

The hardness of steel shot is moderate, usually between HRC40 and 65, and the specific hardness depends on the type of steel shot and the manufacturing process. For example, the hardness of low-carbon steel shot may be between HRC40 and 56, while the hardness of high-carbon steel shot may be higher.

Steel shot has good toughness and can withstand impact during shot peening without breaking easily, thus ensuring a long service life.

  Density and particle size:

The density of steel shot is relatively high, usually above 7.0g/cm³, which helps to improve shot peening efficiency.

The particle size of steel shot is uniform, and steel shot of different particle sizes can be selected according to different process requirements. Particle size uniformity is crucial to ensure the consistency and stability of shot peening effect.

  Appearance and shape:

The appearance of steel shot is usually spherical or nearly spherical, with a smooth surface and no defects such as cracks and inclusions.

Regularly shaped steel shot can better contact with the surface of the workpiece, improving shot peening efficiency and quality.

  Chemical properties

  Chemical composition:

The main chemical components of steel shot include carbon (C), silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), sulfur (S), phosphorus (P) and other elements, as well as possible alloying elements such as chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), etc.

The chemical composition of different types of steel shot may be different to meet different process requirements. For example, low-carbon steel shot has a lower carbon content, usually between 0.08% and 0.30%, while high-carbon steel shot has a higher carbon content.

  Corrosion resistance:

Steel shot itself has a certain degree of corrosion resistance, but in certain specific environments (such as moisture, acid and alkali, etc.), additional anti-corrosion measures may be required.

For occasions that require higher corrosion resistance, special steel shots such as stainless steel shots can be selected.

  Thermal stability:

Steel shot can still maintain good physical and chemical properties at high temperatures and is not easy to deform or soften.

This allows the steel shot to maintain stable performance during the shot peening process and ensure the consistency of the shot peening effect.
